Domain Names and Search Engine Ranking

Article Directory :: Internet Marketing/Online Business Articles

Does the length of your website’s domain name registration have any effect on your ranking in the search engine results? In fact, it does and you may want to look at the lenght of your registrations and lengthen it.

So, the burning question is, should you register your domain name for a long period of time or is a year to year renewal good enough?

The search engines survive on providing good quality, relevant search results to the public, otherwise their customers will just change to another search engine which gives better results. They are, therefore, always looking for ways to separate the legitimate websites from the fly-by-nights. Google and other search engines have realized that most legitimate websites have a commitment towards their business and their domain name so they register it for a long period of time. So, if you register a domain name for several years it shows Google that you’re committed to that domain name. If you register a domain name for 1 year then you’re not as committed to that domain name. This may not be the case in practice, but this is how the search engines interpret it.

If you want to rank ahead of your competition, then you might consider looking at the length of time your competitors have registered their domain names. If your competitors have generally renewed their domain names for one or two years, you might consider registering your domain name for 5 or 10 years. It makes sense to register a domain for at least 10 years if you are serious about the long-term viability of your business. It’s best to obtain the domain names that you want to keep for a while and renew then on a 5 to 10 year plan.

If your domain name expires, it is very possible that someone will register it immediately after it expires. If you don’t renew your domain name before it expires, there will be an unscrupulous person out these watching a ‘watch list’ of expiring domain names (yes, it is hard to believe but people actually do this) and will try to capitalize on the online business that you’ve built over the years. They know that there is potential website traffic that you have built up over the years and they can benefit from your hard work by simply renewing your old domain name. By renewing your domain name for several years, your domain name won’t expire for a while, and it won’t be opened up to expired domain name buyers.

Unfortunately you can lose critical positioning in the search engines if you don’t reregister your domain name before it expires and you will then have to start the SEO process all over again with another domain name! If you are an affiliate marketer and rely on your online business to generate your income, this could have potentially disastrous consequences for your finances.
